Ford Motor Co. says it will offer Apple Inc.’s CarPlay and Google Inc.’s Android Auto smartphone connectivity systems in all its North American 2017 model year vehicles that are equipped with the carmaker’s updated Sync 3 infotainment platform.

Owners of 2016 models with Sync 3 will be able to add CarPlay or Android Auto later in the year. The technology allows users to access various iPhone and Android smartphone features through a vehicle’s built-in displays, controls and audio system.

Ford’s upgraded Sync 3 system features high-speed 4G LTE technology that will allow users to remotely access various features such as unlocking and starting their vehicles, checking fuel levels and locating a parked vehicle.

A variety of new apps also are being added. These include services to locate nearby gas stations and their corresponding fuel prices, points of interests and upcoming local events. Another app allows users to automatically log mileage incurred for business trip expense reports.

Several other carmakers, including General Motors and Hyundai, also are phasing in or soon will offer CarPlay and/or Android Auto on their new vehicles.
