VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. and ITS Russia have signed an agreement to jointly develop intelligent transport systems (ITS) that help enable vehicles equipped with autonomous vehicle technologies to cross international borders.
The program, dubbed Project Cavlane, aims to develop and test border-related services and products for vehicles capable of varying degrees of autonomy. This includes standardized vehicle-to-vehicle communications and queue management systems to help smooth traffic flow.
Cavlane will work with the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade to create a roadmap for ITS and eventually establish a self-driving car route that runs from Finland, through Russia and into China. Businesses from across Europe are expected to join the partnership.
VTT will coordinate Finland’s national business consortium, which consists of Dynniq, Indagon, Infotripla, Nokia and Vediafi. In May a separate project aimed at cross-border transport services was launched by the Finnish Transport Safety Agency’s TrafficLab and the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications.
