Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is preparing to begin assembling its Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and all-new C-class SUVs in India in 2017.
All three models will be produced at the Ranjangaon factory near Pune that FCA shares with Tata Motors Ltd. The facility has the capacity to build 200,000 vehicles per year. FCA is expected to add the Jeep Renegade, a small SUV that shares its platform with the Fiat 500X, at the plant next year.
Imported versions of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee currently have starting prices in India of $106,900 and $123,200, respectively. They compete with Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volvo. The Renegade is likely to be priced around $45,000 and will rival such crossover models as the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.
FCA plans to unveil the C-SUV, which is code-named 551, in Brazil at the Sao Paulo auto show in November. The vehicle will go into production in India next year. Reports say the SUV will share its platform with the Renegade and may adopt the Compass name currently used by a model FCA will discontinue in December.
SUV sales in India will climb to at least 900,000 units annually by 2020 from about 380,000 currently, according to J.D. Power.
