Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has agreed to join a consortium set up a year ago by BMW, Intel and Mobileye (now an Intel company) to develop autonomous vehicle technology.

The group aims to pool their individual strengths to reduce development costs and bring technology to market faster. BMW and Intel note that FCA also will give the burgeoning group significant experience in the North American market.

The partners are developing a common platform that can handle degrees of autonomous control from level 3 (hands off) to level 5 (fully driverless). Delphi Automotive joined the partnership in May as a software developer and systems integrator.
