Prosecutors in Germany are investigating former Volkswagen AG CEO Martin Winterkorn on suspicion of fraud regarding the company’s diesel emission cheating, Reuters reports.
Prosecutors near VW headquarters in Wolfsburg say they have searched 28 homes and offices as part of an expanding probe of high-level VW executives. In a statement, the investigators say Winterkorn may have know about the cheater software used to evade emission tests sooner than he has claimed.
Winterkorn denied knowing about the cheating until it was revealed by U.S. regulators in September 2015. He repeated the assertion earlier this month before a German parliamentary panel.
VW has insisted its board didn’t learn about the cheating until August 2015. Winterkorn resigned shortly after the scandal became public.
