Gardena, Calif.-based startup Faraday Future Inc. is developing autonomous vehicle systems that it plans to test in Michigan as early as the end of the year, The Detroit News reports.

Faraday contacted state officials in January to ask about autonomous vehicle testing requirements and has since applied for manufacturers license plates, Kirk Steudle, director of the Michigan Dept. of Transportation, tells the News. Faraday confirms it will test vehicle “prototypes and features” in Michigan but declines to elaborate.

Formed in mid-2014, Faraday is backed by Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting. The company’s ambitious ramp-up plans call for it to launch production of a series of electric vehicles—likely starting with a crossover/SUV—at a new plant in Nevada by the end of 2017.

The company says its modular platform can accommodate a variety of body styles, wheelbases and electric/hybrid configurations. In January, it unveiled a Batmobile-like EV concept at the CES electronics show in Las Vegas.
