The European Commission has notified Italy that it is beginning legal proceedings over the country’s handling of possible manipulation of diesel emission tests by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.
The letter is a first step in a series of actions that could lead to sanctions against the country’s regulators. The EC complains of Italy's “insufficient action” to address evidence that FCA used illegal software to cheat on emission tests of diesels used in the company’s 500X minicars, Doblo minivans and Jeep Renegade SUVs.
Italy said previously that it found no proof of cheating. Transport Minister Graziano Delrio has requested a delay in the EC’s procedure so it can clarify the commission’s concerns.
