DOE Proposes Another Battery Consortium

The U.S. Dept. of Energy says it is ready to award nearly $63 million to help create a consortium to pursue research on high-power automotive batteries and ultracapacitors over the next five years.
DOE plans to make a single award to the group, whose members would contribute matching funds.
The new consortium would complement the $120 million, five-year energy storage research center DOE announced last week. That effort will be headquartered at the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago and coordinate battery research by five national labs, five Midwest universities and four private enterprise companies.
DOE says the program announced last week will focus primarily on long-term research. The new consortium will concentrate on applied R&D. Both programs seek to develop technologies that can meet or exceed the agency's light-duty battery performance targets for electric and hybrid powertrains.
