Tesla Motors Inc. says a battery fire that destroyed one of its Model S electric sedans in suburban Seattle on Tuesday was triggered by severe damage caused when the car struck a large metal object at expressway speed.
The impact crushed one of the 16 modules within the Model S's lithium-ion battery pack, according to the company. The damage short-circuited the unit, causing a blaze that firefighters eventually extinguished by cutting a hole in the battery container.
Tesla says built-in barriers that isolate each module helped contain the fire.
No one was injured in the freakish accident. But a video of the blaze that received wide Web and media coverage caused Tesla's stock price to drop $19.68 in two days, closing at $173.31 on Thursday.
