Daimler AG says it will begin making SUVs and E-Class sedans at a new factory near Moscow in 2019.
The €250 million ($263 million) factory will have capacity to paint and assemble 20,000 vehicles per year. Daimler says the facility will employ more than 1,000 workers.
Last year, sales of imported Mercedes-Benz cars fell 11% to 36,900% units, in parallel with a 11% decline in the Russian car and light commercial vehicle market. Mercedes sales in the country fell 23% to 2,500 units in January, as the car market shrank 5%, according to the Moscow-based Assn. of European Businesses.
The facility will be operated by the newly created Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing RUS. Daimler also has been part of a commercial vehicle joint venture, Daimler Kamaz RUS, with Russian truckmaker Kamaz since 2010.
