Daimler AG says it “sees value” in bolstering its local supply base around its Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Jason Hoff, CEO of Mercedes-Benz operations in the U.S. held discussions with a handful of suppliers last week, Reuter says. The Tuscaloosa factory is undergoing a $1.3 billion expansion to build more crossover vehicles, including hybrids and a compact SUV.

Hoff says a stronger local supply base would improve manufacturing flexibility and lower costs. Reuters notes that is comments come about expanding the U.S. supply base come days after President Donald Trump complained of the U.S. trade deficit with Germany. Trump also revived his threat to impose a 35% duty on imported cars.

The Tuscaloosa plant has capacity to build about 300,000 vehicles annually. The facility currently assembles C-Class sedans and GLE and GLS crossover vehicles.
