Daimler AG says it intends to eventually build a battery factory in Thailand to supply its locally produced plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The company makes plug-in Mercedes-Benz cars at its Thonburi Automotive assembly plant, a joint venture with Samut Prakan Province in central Thailand. But batteries for the cars are imported from Germany.
Michael Grewe, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Thailand, tells the Bangkok Post the company definitely plans to establish a high-voltage-battery plant in the country. But he indicates no timetable has been set.
The company began making hybrid cars under the BlueTec label in 2013 and has sold more than 4,000 such vehicles since then. The Samut Prakan facility now makes only plug-in variants, which use larger batteries than conventional hybrids.
