Daimler Drops 2017-Model Diesels for U.S.

Daimler AG tells Reuters it has abandoned its effort to certify diesel-powered 2017 model year Mercedes-Benz cars for the U.S. market.
Last year Mercedes offered four diesel models in the U.S., which generated less than 1% of its sales volume there. The unit indicated last autumn that it intended to certify four models for the current year.
But increased scrutiny, triggered by Volkswagen AG’s diesel emission cheating scandal, has slowed the certification process. Daimler has gained approval to offer a diesel in only one light-duty model in the U.S. so far this year: its Sprinter commercial van.
Reuters notes that the emission systems used in Mercedes diesels currently are being investigated by the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency, California Air Resources Board and a prosecutor in Stuttgart, Germany.
