Daimler Debuts 9-Speed Automatic

Daimler AG is introducing its new 9-speed automatic transmission in E-Class sedans and wagons equipped with the company's 6-cylinder diesel engine.
Daimler says the 9-G Tronic gearbox will enable the E-Class to achieve a fuel efficiency rating as high as 44.4 mpg (5.3 liters per 100 km) on the European NCAP test cycle.
The transmission's 9.15 ratio spread produces a noticeable reduction in engine rpm at cruising speed: only 1,350 rpm at 120 kph (75 mph). The design also weighs less and occupies the same package space as the company's 7-speed automatic.
The gearbox architecture involves a relatively few four planetary gear sets, six shift elements and three speed sensors. The design represents the world's first to use a direct control system in a planetary 9-speed automatic, according to the company.
The transmission is equipped with a small, chain-driven mechanical main pump and a separate electric auxiliary pump. Daimler says the configuration allows oil flow to be controlled actively on demand, making it more compatible with an engine stop-start system.
