Daimler AG’s commercial bus unit is introducing an enhanced version of its automated emergency braking (AEB) technology that will include pedestrian recognition.
The fourth-generation system will be available next year in select Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses equipped with adaptive cruise control. The technology, which was launched recently in Mercedes cars and light trucks, combines short- (70-m) and long-range (250-m) radar to detect vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians.
AEB alerts drivers of an imminent collision, then automatically applies the brakes as needed to partially or fully stop a vehicle. Daimler buses equipped with the current system can sense vehicles and other large objects, but not pedestrians.
