Daimler AG says it will start a third shift next week at its assembly plant in Rastatt, Germany, to meet strong demand for the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class minicar.

Daimler says it has hired 500 new permanent workers in Rastatt. The company has received 70,000 orders for the revamped A-Class, which went on sale last month.

A Daimler facility in Kecskemet, Hungary, also is operating at full capacity building the A-Class. Finnish contract assembler Valmet Automobile has agreed to supply more than 100,000 of the minicars between 2013 and 2016.

The production and hiring increase is rare good news amid a wave of auto production cuts across Europe. Last week Daimler concluded contentious labor negotiations to suspend one of two shifts at its Mercedes S-Class plant in Sindelfingen, Germany, until next summer.
