India’s top environmental court has ordered New Delhi to temporarily halt registrations of new diesel-powered vehicles until it decides on Jan. 6 how to improve the city’s abysmal air quality.

In the meantime, the National Green Tribunal has ordered government organizations and state-owned companies to present plans in January for phasing out diesels entirely.

The average concentration of dangerous airborne PM2.5 particulates in New Delhi is 10 times above World Health Organization guidelines, making it the world’s most polluted urban area. Last week the city announced it will implement a plan on Jan. 1 to limit vehicle usage to odd-even days according to their license numbers.
