China’s Changan Demos 55 Autonomous Car Platoon
Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. tested a 55-vehicle fleet of autonomous vehicles driving in line on a closed highway in China.
Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. tested a 55-vehicle fleet of autonomous vehicles driving in line on a closed highway in China.
During the record-setting tests, the crossover vehicles operated in autonomous mode for more than nine minutes over a curving two-mile stretch of road. Traveling at 19 mph, the vehicles stayed in a single-file line within the driving lane.
Changan, which has been testing self-driving cars for several years, aims to launch a semi-autonomous model next year. Last month the carmaker opened an innovation center in Chongqing with partner Huawei Technologies Co. to develop autonomous and 5G connected car technologies.
