China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. has agreed to supply Honda Motor Co. with 56 gigawatt-hours worth of batteries through 2027.

CATL’s devices will be used primarily in electrified vehicles made by Honda in China.

The two companies also have agreed to jointly develop advanced lithium-ion batteries. CATL will set up a research facility in Japan by summer to support the effort.

Set up in 2011, CATL has quickly become one of the world’s largest suppliers of EV batteries. The company has signed supply deals with BMW, Nissan and Volkswagen and is building a battery factory in Germany.
