China plans to "lay the foundation" for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) standards in 2018 and finalize the rules between 2020 and 2025.
China’s auto industry needs a “unification process” for such communication that is agreed to by all carmakers, SAE-China Chief Fu Yuwu tells Reuters. But he concedes integration will be “complicated and difficult” to implement .
The 2018 initiative will be part of the next update to China’s latest Five-Year Plan that was announced earlier this year. The 450-page roadmap specifies policy objectives for China’s auto industry through 2030.The initial plan included provisions for autonomous vehicles but didn’t address V2V/V2I, which is considered a key enabler for self-driving cars.
Earlier this month the U.S. Dept. of Transportation proposed its own law that would require future vehicles be equipped with V2V communication systems. The agency also is developing rules for V2I systems.
