China has abolished its list of recommended suppliers of batteries for electric cars, a move that could open up the market to foreign producers.

The list had no foreign entrants when it was introduced in 2015, Reuters reports. China’s industry ministry says the roster has been eliminated as a part of government management reforms, but it offered no further explanation.

China’s central government has begun phasing out subsidies for EVs. A source at one foreign battery maker tells Reuters it isn’t clear whether China is ready to remove subsidy policies for EV battery production.
