Carlyle Group LP, the Washington, D.C.-based private equity firm, has submitted the highest bid to acquire DuPont's automotive paint business, according to Reuters, which cites unnamed sources.

The news service says DuPont received two other final bids, from Apollo Global Management and KKR/Onex, in late July. A fourth group Blackstone Group and Bain Capital dropped out of the bidding.

Analysts tell Reuters the sale could fetch more than $4.5 billion. DuPont's auto paint unit supplies coatings to General Motors, Ford and such aftermarket refinishers as Maaco.
