The state of California confirms it has demanded that Volkswagen AG present it with a plan by Nov. 20 to repair diesel-powered cars the company rigged to cheat emission tests.
VW presented a similar plan to Germany's transport minister last week. VW's U.S. chief Thomas Horn told a Congressional hearing last Thursday that repairs will vary by engine type and market and are likely to take most of 2016 to complete.
The California Air Resources Board says it sent an "in-use compliance letter" to VW on Sept. 18, giving the company 45 business days to produce a strategy to fix the cars. German media reports say CARB also is conducting tests of diesels made by other carmakers to determine their ability to meet emission standards under real-world driving conditions.
Mary Nichols, who heads CARB, says results of the tests will be announced "within the next few months."
