California's Dept. of Motor Vehicles has issued 29 permits that allow holders to test self-driving cars on public roads.
All but four of the permits went to Google Inc. to test modified Lexus SUVs. The bureau issued two permits each to Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
The licenses require that all autonomous cars have a driver on board who can resume control at any time. The bureau, which began issuing the test permits on Tuesday, says other carmakers are in the process of filing for similar permits.
