California DMV Will Report Autonomous-Car Crashes

California's Dept. of Motor Vehicles has begun using its Web site to publicly post reports of all accidents in the state that involve self-driving cars.
Companies permitted to test autonomous vehicles on California roads have been required since September to tell the DMV about any such incidents. The department's new policy is in response to a request by the Consumer Watchdog advocacy group to make the reports public.
The consumer group also wants the DMV to amend its rules to further require a police report about each crash that involves a robotic car. The department's current policy is to rely upon the testers of autonomous vehicles for details.
The nine crashes posted by the DMV involve eight accidents with Google cars and one with a Delphi test vehicle. Consumer Watchdog notes Google has listed eight other crashes with its cars that occurred before the DMV required carmakers to advise it of such incidents.
