The diesels are among those VW rigged to evade pollution laws. Reuters reports that Todd Sax, the head of the California Air Resource Board, told a state legislative hearing on Tuesday it may not be possible for VW to fix some of the engines.
CARB could order VW to buy back unrepairable cars. But Sax says another option is to accept a partial improvement in emissions. The board also would require VW to pay a fee to offset the health risk of continuing to operate the vehicles. But Sax emphasizes talks continue with VW and no deal has been reached.
