The 50:50 joint venture between Daimler AG and China’s BYD Co. has introduced a new battery that increases the range of its Denza electric sedan by one-third to 400 km (250 miles).
Shenzhen BYC Daimler New Technology says the car’s new 62-kWh battery fits in the same space used by the previous 47.5-kWh unit. The company didn’t indicate whether the new pack maintains BYD’s lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry.
As with its predecessor, the new Denza 400 is based on the Mercedes B-Class small car and its electric variant. The B-Class Electric Drive, which was launched in 2014, has a 31.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers about a 100-mile range on the European driving cycle.
Previous reports have said Mercedes is developing a series of new EVs with driving ranges of about 250 miles.
