Brazil’s environmental agency, IBAMA, has fined Volkswagen AG 50 million reais ($13 million), the maximum possible, for cheating on the country’s diesel emission standards.
VW announced last month it will recall about 17,100 of its 2011-2012 model diesel-powered Amarok small pickup trucks in Brazil after admitting the vehicles are among 11 million equipped with software to cheat on nitrogen oxide emission tests. IBAMA also has ordered the company to submit a plan to fix the trucks in a way that won't compromise engine performance.
The carmaker faces undetermined regulatory fines in the U.S. for 482,000 similarly rigged 4-cylinder diesels it sold there and in Europe for about 8.5 million such vehicles.
