Robert Bosch GmbH says it would be too risky to produce its own battery cells for electric vehicles.

The decision means Bosch is suspending battery cell research and will shut down its 4-year-old Lithium Energy and Power GmbH venture with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. and battery supplier GS Yuasa Corp.

Bosch had been considering whether to compete with Asian manufacturers, which have taken an early lead in battery cell production. But the company says it isn’t clear when or if the investment to do so would pay off.

Instead, Bosch will join other companies that assemble EV batteries from cells supplied by others. Rolf Bulander, who heads the supplier’s mobility unit, tells reporters that Bosch can still be a “significant player” in the EV market without making its own cells.
