Robert Bosch GmbH has reorganized its lithium-ion battery business under a new name, Robert Bosch Battery Systems, effective immediately.
The restructuring follows the dissolution in September of SB LiMotive, Bosch's battery making partnership with Samsung SDI. Samsung agreed to pay $95 million to acquire Bosch's 50% stake in the venture.
Bosch is using $38 million of those funds to buy two of the venture's subsidiaries. One is SB LiMotive Germany in Stuttgart, which specializes in engineering, prototyping, battery management system development, sales and marketing. Bosch also is buying Cobasys LLC in Orion, Mich.
Bosch says it plans to expand work on lithium-ion battery development and production, in party by tapping specialist industry and educational experts in Germany.
