Robert Bosch GmbH CEO Volkmar Denner tells reporters that Volkswagen AG—and not suppliers such as Bosch—is solely responsible for rigging diesel engines to evade emission standards.
Denner also declares that current-generation diesels are “air-cleaning machines” that emit fewer pollutants than they take in, as long as their emission control systems are operating.
Bosch supplies VW with software used to control diesel engines. Regulators are investigating whether the company helped VW modify its software to lower nitrogen oxides emissions enough to pass certification tests only during test procedures. The company has repeatedly denied culpability and previously said it warned VW that turning its software to include a defeat mechanism would be illegal.
Bosch has been conducting an internal investigation into the scandal since VW’s cheating became public in September, according to Denner. He says the company also has been cooperating with government and regulatory probes.
