BMW AG is partnering with China Internet provider Baidu Inc. to test highly automated cars in Beijing and Shanghai over the next two years.

Baidu will provide cloud-based high-resolution map services for the test cars, which will operate on urban highways in the two Chinese cities.

The China program is an extension of BMW's Vision Zero project to develop self-driving systems that could help cut traffic fatalities to zero. BMW says it is particularly eager to test cars on China's multi-level highways.
