The news service cites an internal staff publication, which quotes production chief Harald Krueger. Unidentified sources tell Bloomberg the company's site choices include at least two in Mexico.
Last month CEO Norbert Reithofer said BMW will need additional capacity in North America at some point. Bloomberg's sources report that a second factory will probably build the company's 3 Series sedan. That model accounted for about 55% of BMW brand sales in the U.S. last year.
BMW's 20-year-old factory in Spartanburg, S.C., is the company's global hub for SUV/crossover vehicle production. The complex will expand annual capacity 50% to 450,000 units by 2016, making it BMW's largest assembly plant anywhere.
