The BMW 5 Series and Lincoln MKS large luxury sedans earned "marginal" and "poor" ratings, respectively, in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest batch of demanding "small-overlap" crash tests.
Results apply to 2011-3015 model 5 Series and 2009-2015 model MKS cars.
In the same test, the Infiniti Q70 sedan earned a "good" rating for 2014-2015 models and for the car's previous iteration, the 2013 Infiniti M. The Q70 joins four other large luxury sedans that received "good" scores previously: the Acura RLX, Hyundai Genesis, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo S80.
The institute has delayed similar tests of the Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and Lexus GS sedans because the manufacturers of those cars are making structural changes to improve test performance.
IIHS's small overlap test crashes vehicles into a fixed barrier at 40 mph in such a way that the front quarter of the bumper on the driver's side absorbs the entire energy of impact. The two-year-old test is considerably more severe than the U.S. government's own crash procedure.
