BMW AG's BMW i Ventures electric vehicle unit is making an unspecified investment in California-based Coulomb Technologies Inc. to support the development of a recharging infrastructure for plug-in electrics.

Coulomb's ChargePoint network includes more than 8,600 independently owned EV charging stations in more than 14 countries.

BMW created i Ventures last year as a venture capital unit to expand the company's telematics and navigation services. The carmaker launched its "i" sub-brand for green vehicles in 2011 and aims to introduce its i3 electric city car and high-performance i8 plug-in hybrid coupe next year.
