BMW AG's BMW i Ventures electric vehicle unit is making an unspecified investment in Campbell, Calif.-based Coulomb Technologies Inc. to support the development of a recharging infrastructure for plug-in electrics.
Coulomb's ChargePoint network includes more than 8,600 independently owned EV charging stations in more than 14 countries. Its U.S. customers include Google and SAP, utilities in Florida and Texas, the municipalities of New York City and San Francisco and shopping malls and parking lot companies.
BMW created i Ventures last year as a venture capital unit to expand the company's telematics and navigation services. The carmaker launched its "i" sub-brand for green vehicles in 2011 and aims to introduce its i3 electric city car and high-performance i8 plug-in hybrid coupe next year.
