BMW AG’s new auto assembly plant in Shenyang has increased the company’s production capacity in the country by 50% to 450,000 units.
BMW describes the €1 billion ($1.1 billion) complex as its most technologically advanced and efficient manufacturing facility anywhere. The Financial Times says analysts expect the company will increase its capacity in China to 600,000 units by 2020.
China, which became BMW’s biggest national market five years ago, generates 22% of the company's global sales volume and nearly twice its annual sales results in Germany. Last year the group’s new-car deliveries in China (including its Mini brand) rose 11% to 516,400 units—9% ahead of Mercedes-Benz but 13% below Audi.
BMW’s group sales in January-April totaled 191,700 units, outperforming both rivals, FT says. IHS Automotive predicts BMW will continue to outsell Mercedes in China in 2017-2019 but fall behind in 2020. The market analysis firm forecasts that Audi will continue to outsell both brands throughout the period.
