Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Electric and Nissan are collaborating on a system that uses solar panels to charge an electric vehicle and route power from the EV's batteries to power a home during blackouts, The Nikkei reports.
The charger is designed to work with the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Motors' i MiEV electric cars.
Mitsubishi Electric says the $5,100 system will be the first of its kind in Japan. The Nikkei notes that a typical home battery backup systems with less than half the capacity of an EV costs roughly $21,000 about the price of the Nissan Leaf.
An EV, used with a solar-powered charger, could supply a typical Japanese home for as long as a week, the company says.
