The campaign follows a similar drive in 2019 that took more than 400,000 shared bikes off the road.
Beijing’s transport commission regulates bike-sharing services. It estimates that its residents make 1.6 million shared-bike rides per day. But it says only about 30% of the available shared-bike inventory is in use at any time. The commission has been struggling to manage the resulting clutter of parked bikes through the city.
Beijing introduced bike sharing in 2016. By late 2017, the city had 16 companies operating a combined fleet of nearly 2.4 million bikes.
