Bavaria expects next month to become the first of Germany’s 16 federal states to sue Volkswagen AG for damages linked to the carmaker’s diesel emissions cheating scandal, Reuters reports.
The state's pension fund for civil servants seeks restitution for €700,000 ($785,000) it lost on its shares in VW. The stock’s price fell sharply after the company admitted last September it had rigged some 11 million diesels to evade emission tests.
Bavaria plans to file its lawsuit next month with the regional court in Brunswick. Reuters notes that the state of Lower Saxony has complained about VW’s management but is skeptical that Bavaria’s legal argument will prevail.
