BASF SE and Toda Kogyo Corp. have launched a joint venture in Japan to make cathode materials for locally produced lithium-ion batteries.
The company, BASF Toda Battery Materials LLC, is two-third owned by BASF. Its CEO is Toda Kogyo executive Yasuo Anno. The partners announced plans for the venture last October.
Headquartered in Tokyo's Minato ward, the company intends to develop, make and sell a variety of cathode materials, including those made of NCA (nickel, cobalt and aluminum oxide), LMO (lithium and manganese oxide) and NCM (nickel, cobalt and manganese).
BASF Toda has three factories in Japan with combined output of about 18,000 tons of cathode materials. The partners expect to supply makers of lithium-ion batteries for cars, consumer electronics and stationary energy storage systems.
