BMW AG says its upcoming iNext electric car will have a 500-km (310-mile) driving range and a so-called “3.5 level” of autonomy when it bows in 2021.

The carmaker didn’t provide any details about the vehicle’s drivetrain or features. Media reports speculate the new flagship model will be an SUV/crossover, although BMW showed it in concept form as a sporty sedan (pictured) at last year’s Geneva auto show.

BMW describes level 3.5 autonomy as bridging the gap between hands-off (level 3) and driverless (level 4) automation. The company says its vehicle will be able to handle full vehicle control under certain conditions, but the driver must be able to take control if needed.

Last summer the carmaker announced a partnership with Intel Corp. and Mobileye NV to develop technologies and open standards for such vehicles.
