Volkswagen AG's Audi unit will spend $1.3 billion to erect a new assembly plant in San Jose Chiapa, Mexico, says the country's president, Felipe Calderon.

Audi unveiled the factory plans earlier this week without disclosing its investment.

The facility is scheduled to start building Q5 crossover vehicles in 2016 with initial capacity of 150,000 units per year.
