Volkswagen Group’s Audi unit plans to expand its electrified vehicle lineup to 30 models—including 20 all-electric vehicles—by 2025.
This is twice as many EVs than Audi said were in the works last year. The company’s first all-electric model, the etron crossover (right), bowed earlier this year in Europe.
With the additional models, Audi expects electrified vehicles will account for 40% of its volume by 2025. By then, combined annual sales of hybrids and EVs are projected to surpass 1 million units.
Under the strategy, Audi will replace traditionally powered models with new EVs, CEO Bram Schot said at the company’s annual meeting today in Neckarsulm, Germany.
One of the initial casualties will be the TT sports car (left), which Audi debuted in 1998. Schot says the two-seater, which starts at about $67,000 in the U.S., will be replaced in a few years with a similarly priced "emotive" EV.
The next-generation of Audi’s flagship A8 sedan also could be an EV. Schot says he could “well imagine” such a vehicle but notes that plans haven’t been finalized.
The future of Audi’s R8 supercar also has been in doubt for more than a year. Schot points out that the current V-10-powered model doesn’t fit Audi’s plans to become a leader in premium EVs.
