Audi Nabs New York’s First Autonomous-Car Testing License
Audi AG says it has become the first company to be awarded a license to test autonomous cars on public roads in New York state.
Audi AG says it has become the first company to be awarded a license to test autonomous cars on public roads in New York state. Thirteen other states and the District of Columbia also allow some level of testing on public roadways for self-driving vehicles.
Audi says it aims to evaluate Level 3 self-driving technology, which is able to operate a vehicle automatically under specific conditions. Its license, issued by New York’s Dept. of Motor Vehicles, requires the company to have two engineers aboard each test car, one in the front seat and one in the back seat.
In April the state announced it was launching a one-year pilot program for self-driving car tests. Each licensee must have its planned test routes approved by the state police, which also must supervise each demonstration.
