Audi Confirms All-Electric Crossover in 2018
Audi AG engineering chief Ulrich Hackenberg confirms media reports that the company will launch a battery-powered large SUV/crossover in early 2018.
Audi AG engineering chief Ulrich Hackenberg confirms media reports that the company will launch a battery-powered large SUV/crossover in early 2018.
The company served up a teaser photo of the angular model, which will not resemble any other production Audi vehicle. Reports say the EV will be called the Q6 e-tron.
The car will utilize parent company Volkswagen AG's second-generation modular longitude matrix (MLB 2) platform. Hackenberg says the chassis enables Audi to assemble the EV on the same line that makes piston-powered MLB-based cars. He adds that MLB production lines also can work with steel, aluminum and mixtures of both materials.
Audi promises a 500-km (300-mile) range for the upcoming SUV. Hackenberg promises a more detailed presentation about the car "soon."
The vehicle will be Audi's second in the all-electric e-tron series. The company launched the first such model, the R8 e-tron sports car, at the Geneva auto show last week.
