Beginning later this year, Audi AG will begin offering a wireless toll management system on select models sold in the U.S.
Using a universal transponder built into the rearview mirror, the automated payment system allows vehicles to pass through toll booths in the U.S.—and parts of Canada and Mexico—without requiring multiple windshield tags and accounts for different regions and countries. Drivers also can adjust the settings to allow them to use “high-occupancy-vehicle” lanes when appropriate.
The Integrated Toll Module is provided by Gentex Corp., the Michigan-based supplier of automatic dimming mirrors for all Audi vehicles in the U.S. The toll payment technology was developed by Nashville, Tenn.-based TransCore, which licenses it to Gentex.
