Audi Adds Fenceless Robot to Help Human Worker

Audi AG has installed a robot that works without a safety barrier aside a human worker on a final assembly line at its factory in Ingolstadt, Germany.
Audi's robotic assistant works without a cage.
Audi describes the installation as the first by the Volkswagen Group to involve direct cooperation between a robot and a person.
The Kuka brand robot, known as PART4you, picks coolant expansion tanks out of their delivery container and hands them to a human for installation. Audi says the robot retrieves the part and holds it at an ergonomically optimal position for the human worker to take when needed.
The installation relieves the worker of repeatedly bending over to grab the tanks. Audi emphasizes the setup enables the robot to work at the pace of the worker rather than the other way around.
The robot is covered with a soft protective skin and uses built-in safety sensors. Audi says the installation has been granted a safety certificate from the company's liability insurance association.
