Amazon.com is ramping up its automotive business with plans to sell cars online to European buyers.
The online retail giant, which launched a pilot program with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV last year in Italy, is making a “large” investment to sell vehicles online, reports Automobilwoche. Sales will start in the U.K., then expand to other European markets, according to the German newspaper.
Christoph Moeller, who previously managed the automotive operations for the Oliver Wyman consulting group, has been hired to lead Amazon’s European auto team. The new group will be based in Luxembourg.
As part of the new program, Amazon plans to offer test drives to car shoppers in select markets, industry sources tell Automobilwoche. The retailer already offers this capability for some Mercedes-Benz models in Europe.
In late 2015, Amazon’s Orix Corp. affiliate began leasing vehicles online. And last summer the retailer launched its Amazon Vehicles automotive research portal for car buyers.
