Alibaba Partners with SAIC on Connected-Car Project
Asia Internet giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and China's SAIC Motor Corp. have set up a 1 billion-yuan ($160 million) fund to launch a connected car next year.
Asia Internet giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and China's SAIC Motor Corp. have set up a 1 billion-yuan ($160 million) fund to launch a connected car next year.
SAIC, China's largest carmaker, says the companies will develop an electronic platform for cloud-based, Web-enabled vehicles. Alibaba will provide cloud computing and in-car navigation, data and entertainment services.
The partnership is the latest in a fast-growing field of similar projects to bring advanced connectivity to the automobile. Google and now Apple have similar plans. Earlier this week China search engine company Baidu Inc. said it may unveil a car with self-driving capabilities as early as this year.
Bloomberg News notes that Alibaba may promote its own operating system, dubbed YunOS, in the connectivity platform it will develop with SAIC.
